Concord, MA to be First U.S. Town to Ban Bottled Water

Last week residents of Concord, Massachusetts voted to ban the sale of all bottled water by next January, making it the first U.S. town to take such action.
The effort was lead by Jean Hill, an 82-year old activist, who lobbied neighbors and officials alike on the consequences of plastic bottles filling landfills and polluting local waters. “All these discarded bottles are damaging our planet, causing clumps of garbage in the oceans that hurt fish, and are creating more pollution on our streets,” says Hil. “This is a great achievement to be the first in the country to do this. This is about addressing an injustice.”
Of course, the $10 billion industry is less than thrilled with the news and has even threatened a legal challenge. They argue that singling out bottled water is unfair when “thousands of food, medicinal, beauty and cleaning products packaged in plastic.” But this isn’t the first time bottled water has been targeted.

seriously. bottled water is NOT better. snap out of it! learn to love your tap. just think of how many more times you’ll be able to say“i’d tap that” once you start using your reusable bottle!

Once, when I was in Syracuse, NY, I went to a Target and bought a fantastic purple water bottle. It took me 10 minutes to pick out the best one. Upon my arrival home, I realized I didn’t have my amazing water bottle! I had never got to use it! Not even once! Yeah, so I cried, what’s it to you? Turns out, my parents had it, and they returned it to me almost 2 weeks later. The reunion was a joyous event. Having my purple water bottle back has improved my life by at least 47%.
And I understand, some cities have shitty tap water, and you don’t want to drink it. I get it, that’s how it is at my parents house - so they bought a Brita filter; you can get one for either for your tap, or for a jug in your fridge. I have one of those too, but I like Toronto tap water, so I use it for my cats. (They’re a bit snobby when it comes to water quality.)
My point? You really, really don’t need to use bottled water. Buying a reusable water bottle will save you money and save the environment and the animals and the whole fucking Earth. And it’s such a small step! Do it, already.
