Originally posted at Penelope Bagieu’s blogPedantically, I must correct the initial assertion that the earth is 98% water by volume. Water makes up about 0.02% of the Earth’s mass. Water is a surface feature; the planet is mainly rock.
That said, don’t let that take away from the excellent message here. It’s why I stopped eating most fish. I can’t have it on my conscience. The violence—and it is unbridled, pure violence—that we do to the oceans is among the worst things we’ve done as a species. We’ll come to regret it, I guarantee you.
This is a huge problem, and it’s why I too stop eating most fish. There are some guides out there to help you figure out which fish is caught sustainably.
A good resource is SeaChoice
If you find that a bit overwhelming, check out David Suszuki’s Top Ten Sustainable Seafood picks.
